Kryten is about to go off line and sends his hand to go get help. Lister and The Cat find Kryten and repair him. They discover that they are on a psimoon that is controlled by Rimmer's emotions. The crew rescue Rimmer by convincing him that they care for him. - The crew pickup a distress beacon signal that leads them to a science station on an ice planet. They encounter Doctor Langstrom, a hologram, that has contracted a holovirus (psivirus). Her energy is drain from the virus and see goes off-line, but not before transmitting the virus to Rimmer. The rest of the crew return to Red Dwarf, to find out that Rimmer has locked all the bay doors. The crew go into quarantine expecting to spend the next three months there.
- (+5 days) The crew discover that Rimmer has contracted the holovirus, and use a luck virus that they found on the science station to escape the quarantine berth. They encounter Rimmer and manage to turn him off before the virus completely took over his body. When Rimmer wakes up he discovers that the rest of the crew has put him in quarantine.
- Lister uses a Triplicator and accidentally creates two Red Dwarfs, one with all positive attributes and the other with all negative attributes, and destroys the original in the process. They go aboard the two other ships to get parts to the Triplicator. They succeed and recreate the original ship. - The crew discover a ship, SSS Esperanto, that everyone, including the fish, committed suicide. The crew get affected by a venom that inducing hallucination. The crew return to Starbug being chased by a squid. The ship hits a mountain and is destroyed. The crew find that they were playing a total immersion video game (TIV) and that Red Dwarf does not exist. Holly forces the crew out of that hallucination before they commit suicide. - Lister parks Red Dwarf around a blue-green planetoid. Lister, Kryten, The Cat, and Rimmer take Starbug and go off somewhere. (Where they go is unknown.) When they come back they can't find Red Dwarf or Holly. (Lister can't remember which planetoid he parked it around.) - The crew finds the vapor trail of Red Dwarf and head after it in Starbug. Knowing that this will take many centuries, Lister and The Cat go into a deep sleep, while Rimmer is deactivated. Kryten monitors their life support systems and makes sure that nothing goes wrong with Starbug.
3,002,385
- (Spring) Kryten tries to wake Lister from deep sleep, but Lister insists on another three months.
- (Summer)(+3 months) Kryten wakes Lister and The Cat from deep sleep. Rimmer's hologram is also activated. Still following the vapor trail of Red Dwarf, the crew find out that the ship is circumnavigating an asteroid belt. Starbug is small enough to go through the belt to cut Red Dwarf off "at the pass." They find a ship graveyard in the asteroid belt. The entire belt is inhabited by GELFs, known as Psirens. These Psirens can alter your perception telepathically. They use the power of illusion to lure anyone onto an asteroid, then suck out their brains. Starbug crashes on an asteroid. A Psiren, disguised as Lister, comes aboard the ship. Kryten kills the GELF by falling on it. When they get to the other side of the belt they find out that Red Dwarf has gone through a gas nebula.
- (2 months ago) The crew discover a crashed vessel on an ice-covered planet. The captain of the ship, was apparently shot. Lister finds some peanuts in his pocket, and takes them. He also gets a mint imperial, that the captain was sucking on, by prying his jaws open with a car jack.
- Starbug is now almost 24 hours behind Red Dwarf. Starbug gets caught in a malfunctioning guidance beam and are taken to a space station. There they meet Legion, a gestalt entity. Legion rebuilds Rimmer's light bee, making him a hard light hologram. He tells the crew that they cannot leave the station.
- (+1 day) Legion tells the crew that he will not survive if they leave the station. Kryten knocks the other three members unconscious, thus making Legion like himself. Since humans have precedence over mechanoids, Legion is forced to assist in their safe passage to Starbug. Before the leaving the station, Legion gives Kryten a star drive, that will help Starbug catch up to Red Dwarf in a matter of nanoseconds. The star drive works, but gets loose and flies off out of the ship.
- (October 14) Lister celebrates his 28th birthday. (This happens to due to altering the time line and time traveling.) - (-1 month) The crew finds a derelict ship, believed to have been attacked by Rogue Simulans. On the ship they find an Artificial Reality machine.
- (Last Thursday) Lister is having a few beers, and is too lazy to get up. So he uses the release mechanism on the escape pod, and it escapes!
- (Present) Kryten discovers minute amounts of millennium oxide in the system. Starbug has entered a Rogue Simulan zone. The Rogue Simulans catch up with Starbug, and knock all four crew members unconscious. They upgrade Starbug to make it more of a "fair" fight.
- (+3 weeks) The crew wake up. Starbug attacks the Simulan war vessel, and get a fluke hit on the ship. Before the bridge of the Simulan vessel explodes, they download the Armageddon Virus to Starbug's navicom. The navicom locks out all inputs, and the ship is heading straight into a small moon. Kryten logs onto the navicom to get the virus and find an antidote before Starbug crashes. Losing the battle, the rest of the crew go into Kryten's subconscious to help him with the virus. They give Kryten enough time to come up with the antidote. Starbug safely flies away from the small moon.
- Space Corps. External Enforcement vehicle catches Starbug and punishes them with looting Space Corps. Vessels. The crew escapes by going into GELF space, but get hit, and are forced to land on a GELF moon. Everything is repairable except for the oxy-generation unit. The crew get a O/G Unit from the Kinitawawi tribe in exchange for Lister to marry one of the GELFs. He does but flees immediately afterward. A polymorph sneaks on the ship and takes The Cat's cools, and Rimmer's negativity. The four track it down and freeze it with liquid dalinium, and extract the DNA and replace it in The Cat and Rimmer. - (A week last Thursday) The crew, escaping from the disintegrating Simulan ship, arrives on Starbug using the teleporter.
- (+2 weeks since Gunmen of the Apocalypse) Starbug returns to the Simulan ship to pick up supplies and fuel. One of the Simulans discovers them and attempts to kill them. Rimmer escapes in the escape pod, thus causing the ship to disintegrate. The rest of the crew use a teleporter, that they found on the ship, and escape back to Starbug. Rimmer is forced to go through a worm hole. (Due to time dialation he will have to wait 600 years on a S3 planet waiting for the rest of the crew to get him. For them it will only be a few hours.) While on the planet Rimmer creates an entire race of himselves from cloning his DNA. The rest of the crew arrive and are arrested for being brave and honest. In the cell they find the real Rimmer, who has been in there for 557 years. They all escape using the teleporter.
- (Weeks later) While escaping from Rimmer world, the crew arrive on Starbug. Their future selves are trying to figure out what to do for Lister, who is in some hideous situation.
- (December 25) The crew fight a pan-dimensional liquid beast from the Magadon Cluster. - Starbug enters dense interstellar fog. Within this fog are pockets of unreality, which causes the crew to see things that don't exist. (i.e. Lister is a mechanoid, The Cat disappears, and they have animal heads.) The crew decide to go into a stasis sleep until they arrive at the other side.
- (+3 days) The crew arrive at Gemini 12, a Space Corps. ship that has equipped in it a Time Drive. They attach the Time Drive to Starbug and see if it works. Another Starbug arrives and it is themselves from 15 years into the future. Their future selves need to copy parts off of the Time Drive to make their own work properly again. Lister, determine not to become like their future counterparts removes them from their ship. Their future counterparts decide to attack knowing that they would never want to have been like their past selves. During the battle the present version of Lister and The Cat are killed in combat while Kryten goes off-line. Rimmer tries to destroy the Time Drive before he is killed. Just as he shoots the Time Drive, Starbug is hit and . . . . Because Rimmer destroyed the Time Drive before they were killed, they survived. But the time line was unstable so both realities merged to form a paradox. So the time line was corrected before the crew got the Time Drive, and Starbug's cargo deck increased by 212%. The laser cannon breached the main water tank and flooded Supply Deck B, and destroyed all the Indian food and lager supplies.
3,002,386
- (Friday) Lister urinates on Rimmer from D Deck.
- (Wednesday) The ship passes a red moon.
- (Thursday) Lister tries to do a ship's log explaining about the incident with their future selves. During his report, the camera explodes. (It's the third one this week.)
- (Friday) Kryten finally gets enough courage (and the supplies in the kitchen were finally depleted) to tell Lister that all the Indian food supplies are gone and there is no more lager. Lister tries to convince Kryten to go back to Gemini 12 and pick up the Time Drive, so they can go and pick up a two-year supply of curries. Kryten doesn't think they should alter the time line, due to causality. Kryten goes off-line for 12 hours to disguard some old cache files. While doing this, Lister replaces Kryten's head with Sparehead 2, and removes his guilt chip and disables his behavior protocols.
- (Saturday) Lister asks Kryten again if they can make "a curry run to the 22nd-century." Kryten, now agrees so the crew set a course back to the Gemini 12.
- (Monday, 9 days later) The crew arrive at Gemini 12, and get the Time Drive and set it for the "closest curry shop." They accidentally land in November, 1963, during the Kennedy assassination.
- (Tuesday) Getting fed up with the "new" Kryten, Lister replaces his original head back on him, with his behavioral protocols and guilt chip intact.
- Rimmer and Lister find a way to go back in time. (Lister marries Kochanski. Kochanski doesn't want to leave with Lister, even though she knows what's going to happen. To her, her job comes first. Lister and Rimmer leave, and return to Starbug.) - Ace Rimmer, arrives from another dimension. This Ace is not the original, but is one of the many who have taken over. Ace is now a hard light hologram. He is dying and has about 12 hours left to live. He wants Arnold to take over for him, but Arnold doesn't want to. After some convincing from Lister, Rimmer starts his training with Ace. Ace dies and everyone, except Lister, assumes that it's Arnold that has died. The crew sends Ace's remains in a coffin out into space. Arnold seeing how many people that have become Ace, makes him decide. Arnold get's into his ship as Ace Rimmer, and goes off to fight evil in other dimensions. - The crew fight the Vidal Beast of Sharma II. They nearly lose their lives. - The ship enters a rip in the fabric of space/time. They go through a hyperway and meet up with a hard light Lister and a living Kochanski, from a parallel universe. The ship gets attacked by the Gelf bride that Lister left on his honeymoon night. Kochanski gets stuck in our universe after the tear closes. She has Lister "deposit" into the invitro tube so she can have a baby. Lister realizes that the baby is actually him. (Due to the writing of "Ouroboros", a battery company, written on the side of the box.) - Kochanski wants to take a bath, and Lister gives her his quarters to do it. Kryten gets jealous and overloads the thermosettings of the ship, causing all systems to shutdown. All the doors lock as an automatic feature, to prevent fires and strengthen the hull integrity. The crew have to travel through the ship's ducts to get the backup generator on line. The ship is heading straight for a meteor shower. The shower is 12 hours away and it will take at least 6 hours to get to the backup generator. After about 3 hours of traveling through the ducts the crew end up trapped in the same room that they started in. Kryten opens up the door, and explains that he deactivated the locking mechanism on the doors, in case something like this happens. - (Few weeks since "Ouroboros") Starbug is heading straight for the tail of a phasing comet. They pass through it, but must jettison some of their supplies overboard, because the ship is too heavy and can't use the thrusters. Lister still misses Rimmer. Lister and the Cat go down to the hold to see what they can get rid of. Lister starts to link everything they find, to an experience with Rimmer. That night Lister has a dream of Rimmer coming back and the two kissing.
- (+ 1 day) Lister tell his dream to Kryten, who tries to help him. It doesn't work. So Kryten creates "The Rimmer Experience" in the AR booth, so anytime anyone is depressed and miss Rimmer they can go in there and "visit" him. After coming out of there, Lister is so disgusted with Rimmer, he never wants to see him again. Lister goes to the cargo deck and jettisons everything that is remotely related to Rimmer.
- (- 2 Days) Starbug discovers the ship SS Centauri. Kryten finds four live lobsters that were in the stasis block. He takes them back to Starbug and plans to make a nice meal for the crew to celebrate Kryten's anniversary with the crew. Kochanski finds a new Artificial Reality software program, "Jane Austen World."
- (Anniversary of the day Kryten was found by the crew) Kryten finally gets the lobster meal prepared for the crew. Kochanski lures the crew to go into the AR machine to try out the new software. Kryten gets feed up with waiting for them to eat the meal he prepared, so he goes in there and "kicks" them out. While eating dinner, Lister asks for brown ketchup for his meal. Kryten can't believe this and his head explodes. They put on his sparehead, and that explodes too. Fortunately, they still had the RAM chips and now need to get a new head for him.
- (+1 day) The crew head back toward the SS Centauri looking for spareheads stumble across a simulants living quarters. To avoid being captured by the simulant, and to try to get the heads, Kochanski, and the Cat dress up as Gelfs so they won't get killed, and Lister is disguised as their human pet. They meet up with a Simulant who tries to convince them to trade Lister for a sparehead. Actually, he stalls them long enough for his sidekick to go over to Starbug to steal Kryten's body and his RAM chip. The simulant activates Kryten, through the use of his "brother" Able, another 4000 series mechanoid, who is addicted to ultrazone. The crew, with Able, try to escape from the simulant, but are unable. Able, sacrifices himself so the rest can escape by using the power of Kryten's negadrive. The crew recover Able's body, so Kryten can perform last rights.
- The crew discover an astro-glacier. They are trying to get water from it when they discover that a starship is buried inside. It is the Leviation, a 23rd century JMC supply ship. There is a lifeform on board. It is Caroline Carmen, a supply officer, who spent time on Red Dwarf. She is frozen in ice. The crew try to thaw her out but it doesn't work. She wakes up in a zombie-like form. She transfers the epideme virus to Lister.
- (+1 day) Kryten discovers that Lister has the epideme virus. The virus is a man-made parasite created as a rival to the nicotine patch. It was intelligent, and was designed to block all the neural signals to nicotine cravings, unfortunately, it also block all signals telling the body it needs blood and oxygen. Kryten puts an anti-body in Lister forcing the bacteria into his right arm. They slice off his arm, but still some of the virus escapes into his body. Lister, determined to destroy the virus before it destroys him, goes back to the Leviation and plans to blow it up. He finds out that there might be a cure on Delta 7, but that is far away. Kryten finds out from Epideme that there is a way to make Starbug's engines 300% faster.
- (+2 days) Starbug arrives at Delta 7. They find out that it was destroyed a long time ago. The crew decide to stop Lister's heart to give him more time to live. Lister, zombified, transfers the virus into Kochanski. It wasn't her arm, but Carmen's arm. They revive Lister, who is safe from the virus.
- (+1 week, 2 days) Lister is still trying to cope with his right arm being gone. Kryten finds a 21st-century mechanical arm and attaches it to Lister. Lister has trouble using it at first, but his subconscious eventually takes over and it "attacks" Kryten. Kryten explains that his body once had nanobots, small mechnical machines that can repair carbon objects. But the last time he had them
- (Some time later, Wednesday) The crew are awakened, when they arrive around a planet. In orbit around the planet is Red Dwarf! The nanobots took over Red Dwarf and sealed it into a planetoid, before making a sub-atomic version of Red Dwarf. (That was what the crew was following all this time.) Kryten finds the nanobots and orders them to repair the ship and give Lister his arm back. They give Lister is arm back, but also make him into a steroid filled muscular person too. They return Red Dwarf to them, but when the cat flies Starbug into the ship, they find that the ship is several times larger than normal! Lister's body returns to it's normal size. Starbug gets sucked into a vent. Red Dwarf starts to shrink to it's normal size. Starbug tries to escape the vents and is finally destroyed. (It turned out that Holly recreated the nanobots so they could recreate the ship.) The nanobots also recreated the entire crew. Lister is accused of stealing and crashing a Starbug, having no pilot's license, and smuggling 2 stowaways on board along with Kochanski. He is put on quarters arrest. He tries to convince the recreated Rimmer (who is alive) to help him escape, by giving him access to the crew's confidential files so he can make rank. A physchological review is done on Kryten and it is determined that he should be reset to factory settings. Rimmer goes to the remains of Starbug and gets the confidential files, he also stumbles over the sexual magnetism and luck viruses. He tests the sexual magnetism out to see if it really works. Rimmer goes back to his quarters and and reads up on the files. He goes to the captain's office and gives him a report on new safety procedures for drive plate repairs, a muffin to help him celebrate his wedding anniversary and by giving him bile cream. The captain is suspicious of Rimmer's new found intelligence he gives him an envelope that is an invitation to the Captain's table. (Rimmer licks the envelope that has psychotropic drugs on it.) He is placed in a Artifical Reality machine so his actions can be watched. A medical examination is done on Kryten and he is reclassified as a woman.
- (+1 day, since last event. Thursday) The foursome go to the inquiry and agree to have psychotropic drugs used for a mindscan. They sign a form agreeing to this and lick the envelopes (which have the drugs unknowingly placed on it.) They are placed in AR also so they can be watched.
- (+2 days, Friday) The crew are found innocent on the original charges, and removed from the AR. But, they are found guilty on using confidential files and get a statatory sentence of 2 years. The foursome are taken to the brig (known as "The Tank") on floor 13. During their orientation Lister pours the rest of the tube of sexual magnetism on Rimmer, making him attractive to all of the other inmates. The prisoners are taken to their quarters to rest up for their first day of work. Rimmer is upset at Lister for what he did and won't talk to him. Lister tries to make him say something and it finally works.
- (+3 days, Saturday) After their first day of work, Rimmer is so depressed he goes to see the social worker, who beat him up. He called Rimmer a "wining nancy boy with girlie white legs." Then he pummels him repeatly with his book, "Showing Compassion to Inmates." So shell-shocked Rimmer then goes to see the priest and explains everything. He calls Rimmer "a wining baby who was missing his mum." Then he beats him up too. You can still see the crucifix marks on the back of his head.
- (Monday) Lister joins himself and his friends in the Canaries, thinking that they would get some privileges. The Canaries are a group of prisoners who are sent out on dangerous missions to make sure the area is safe for others. Their first mission is to go to the SSS Silverberg, a derelict ship located in an ocean on amoon. They stumble over Cassandra, a computer that can predict the future with 100% accuracy. She says that Lister, Cat, Kryten, and Kochanski will live and Rimmer will die. The ship is also taking on water. Cassandra lies to Rimmer and tells him that he will sleep with Kochanski and Lister will come in and kill him with a harpoon. Kryten figures out that Cassandra lied to Rimmer because she knows that Lister will destroy here. Lister bursts in on Rimmer and Kochanski before anything happens, then he goes to Cassandra and tells her he won't destroy her, but does "accidentally" kill her anyway. - Becuase of her good behavior, Kochanski is placed on probation and giving more rights. - (Monday) Petersen sends Lister a letter telling him that he found his guitar in Starbug's wreckage and is having it sent to him. When Lister gets it the strings have been conviscated; so prisoners can't hang themselves. Lister gets a chance to get an appeal for his case.
- (+1 day, Tuesday) The warden gets mugged and his glass eye is stolen.
- (+2 days, Wednesday) The warden asks the prisoner who stole his eye to return or all of the privileges will be revoked. Rimmers tells on the prisoner who stole the eye, so it would help the appeal look good. Kryten gets kidnapped by Kill Crazy and is reprogrammed. Kryten performs "Krytie TV", the first show is done in the woman's shower.
(+3 days, Thursday) Lister plans on giving Kochanski 2 bags of flour to apologize for watching the shower incident. (2 bags of flour = flowers!) Kryten lies to Lister telling him that the women found out about the shower incident and kicked him out. He was reclassified as a man and moved in with Rimmer and Lister. He then tells Lister that Kochanski and her ex-boyfriend, Tim, are going out tonight and tells him how to sabotage Tim's quarters. Lister does what Kryten said, but finds out that it's actually the warden's quarters. With Rimmer's help, Lister helps clean teh quarters. They chase down and capture Kryten and reprogram him back to the way he was.
(+4 days, Friday) Lister's appeal finally comes through and is approved. He is granted the right have guitar strings on his guitar. He plans on thanking Rimmer for helping him by writing a song for him.
- Rimmer and Lister play a prank on Ackerman. They insert a capsule of truth serum, sodium pentathol, into his asthma inhaler. This causes him to report to the bridge apoligizing for being late because he was having "jiggy jiggy" with the science officer's wife and didn't have enough time to change out of his Batman outfit. They report to the Captain's office for this. Their punishment is that they must choose a team of their liking and play a game of baskbetball against the guard's team lead by Ackerman. Before the game Lister has one of the skutter's go into the MediLab and steal some impotency drug to put in the guards half time juice. The gang is losing the game miserably, and at half time the guards drink the juice that makes them instantly excited, making it difficult for them to move. The gangs wins the game easily.
- (+1 day) Rimmer and Lister report to the captain's office for the basketball incident and are put on spud duty for 2 weeks. They have Bob the skutter steal a programmable virus, so they can program it to peel the potatoes. Meanwhile, the canaries go to the SS Manny Celeste to locate 2 missing canary batallions. They find the batallions frozen in time, caused by Tempest, a time wand. They send the batallion back in time before they found the wand, and smuggle it aboard the ship.
- (+2 days) Lister and Rimmer put the virus on the potatoes and it works like a charm. The virus gets on them and eats their clothes and hair. Rimmer transfers the virus onto the captain who gives them 2 months in the hole. Kryten uses the timewand and freezes the entire crew. In the hole Rimmer and Lister meet "birdman" and his sparrow Pete. Bob the skutter helps them escape. Pete dies and Kryten tries to revive him with the timewand, but reverts him into a Tyrannasaurus Rex. They try to change him back, but he eats Bob the skutter who was holding the wand. In his stomach, Bob unfreezes the entire crew. The gang make a "cow vindaloo" to help the T-Rex pass the wand. The dino eats it and it was too hot so it runs off. The gang are captured. The dinosaur passes the wand and and sedated by the ship's security team. The canaries are sent on a mission to revert the dinosaur back to a bird. They find the sleeping dinosaur and revert him back to a sparrow. They destroy the wand not wanting to cause anymore trouble. Lister and Rimmer then find a dinosaur egg that's about to hatch. The baby T-Rex escapes and "attacks" the captain by licking his back while he is getting a massage. He has post traumatic stress order and can't speak. He seriously thinks about placing himself in the hole for 12 months, but decides not to. The baby T-Rex is captured by the crew.
- Kryten, Cat, Lister and Rimmer are finally placed on probation. - A lone pod, with one lifeform, arrives from the SS Hermes, which was destroyed byt a chameleonic microbe. 6 hours later, after quarantine, the microbe, which hid onboard, escapes without anyone knowing it. Kryten buys a calendar for Kochanski because she says "it's the wrong time of the month." Lister tricks Kryten into throwing a "Period Party" for Kochanski. Kryten gets his reverge on Lister by stealing some of Baxter's illegal hooch and hiding it his shower, just ten minutes before an inspection. They try to drink it all, but get caught with it anyways. They are taken to the hospital to get their stomachs pumped. The microbes begin to eat the ship. The crew take all of the escape pods and transport vessels leaving the prisoners behind. The gang decide to take some of the microbes into a mirror universe where it would be the antidote, which they could bring back and fix the ship. They open a portal, and Rimmer enters, but the machine breaks leaving him stranded there. He gets the antidote's name, and the portal is reopened, but the rest of the gang have already gone into the mirror universe looking for him. The antidote he brings back reverses itself so it's the virus once again. The machine that opened the portal is now destroyed by the microbes, so Rimmer is left alone on a ship that is quickly falling apart. . . . . .
- (+7 months 2 weeks since "Ouroboros") Kochanski places the invitro tube, with Lister's "deposit", into the ship's uteral simulation chamber.
3,002,387
- (+16 months 2 weeks since "Ouroboros") Baby Lister is born.
- (+18 months since "Ouroboros") Lister uses the Time Drive and takes the baby version of himself, age 6 weeks, back to 2155. He places the child in a box, marked "Ouroboros", under a pool table at the Aigburth Arms in Liverpool.
3,002,400
- The crew of the Starbug, with the Time Drive, travel back 15 years to meet themselves. They need to copy components off of the Time Drive to make their own work properly again. Their past selves destroy the Time Drive, so this even doesn't happen.
3,002,526
- Lister, age 171, appears as a future echo from here urging the younger Lister to take a picture of his twin sons.
3,002,536
- Lister, age 181, dies trying to remove a bra with his teeth.
END OF TIME
- The Inquisitor, a self-repairing simulant, living million of years alone comes to the conclusion that there is no God, no afterlife, and the only purpose of existence is lead a worth-wild life. He constructs a time machine and travels through space and time and erases all those who wasted their life and replaces them with people who never had the chance of life.

What is Red Dwarf?
Red Dwarf is a British TV show that has been airing on the BBC since 1988. It's a half-hour science fiction comedy that tells the story of the last living human being and his nonhuman companions in the distant future. The premise of the show is best summed up in the opening narration (by Holly, the ship's computer) used in the first series:
This is an S.O.S. distress call from the mining ship Red Dwarf. The crew are dead, killed by a radiation leak. The only survivors are Dave Lister, who was in suspended animation during the disaster, and his pregnant cat, who was safely sealed in the hold. Revived three million years later, Lister's only companions are a life-form who evolved from his cat, and Arnold Rimmer, a hologram simulation of one of the dead crew.
Accompanied by the Cat, Rimmer, Holly, and an android named Kryten, Lister pursues his dream of returning to Earth and settling down with his long-lost girlfriend. Along the way, he encounters parallel universes, time warps, genetic mutants, holes in space, and a moon shaped like Felicity Kendal's bottom.
The regular cast of the series is:
Dave Lister Craig Charles
Arnold Rimmer Chris Barrie
Holly Norman Lovett (Series 1, 2, 7, 8)
Hattie Hayridge (Series 3-5)
The Cat Danny John-Jules
Kryten Robert Llewellyn (Series 3-8)
Kristine Kochanski Chloe Annett (Series 7-8)
Red Dwarf is also a series of novels based on the TV show. The novels greatly expand on, and are greatly different from, the show. Many of the same ideas appear in the novels, but these ideas are put together in new and interesting ways. Four novels have been published so far:
Red Dwarf: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers
by Grant Naylor
ISBN 0-14-012437-3
Penguin, 1989
Red Dwarf: Better Than Life
by Grant Naylor
ISBN 0-14-012438-1
Penguin, 1990
Red Dwarf: Last Human
by Doug Naylor
ISBN 0-67-085255-4
Penguin, 1995
Red Dwarf: Backwards
by Robert Grant
ISBN 0-670-84574-4
Penguin, 1996
The first two novels have been reprinted in a single volume:
Red Dwarf Omnibus
by Grant Naylor
ISBN 0-14-017466-4
Penguin, 1991
This combined rerelease also contains the script for "Dave Hollins, Space Cadet" (one of the Son of Cliché sketches that started it all), a reproduction of the beer mat on which the idea for Red Dwarf was allegedly first written, and the original script for "The End" (the first episode of the series).
Did Red Dwarf start on radio?
Not exactly. Rob Grant and Doug Naylor wrote the short-lived radio series Son of Cliché (broadcast in two six-episode runs on BBC Radio 4 in 1984). In an ongoing series of sketches, a space cadet named Dave Hollins was trapped alone on a spaceship with a slightly senile computer called HAB. (The voice of HAB was provided by Chris Barrie, the actor who plays Rimmer in Red Dwarf.) Many of the ideas and jokes from these sketches were later incorporated into Red Dwarf, but there is no direct connection.
The script for one of the "Dave Hollins, Space Cadet" sketches is included in the Red Dwarf Omnibus.
Audio book versions of the Red Dwarf novels exist, and one of them (Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers, read by Chris Barrie) has been aired on BBC radio. Sound effects were added and the recording was divided into parts for broadcast, but the show was otherwise identical to the audio book. The result is available for purchase as Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers: The Radio Show.
Is there an American version of Red Dwarf?
No, not really. The NBC network expressed interest in an American version of the show and two pilots were made by Universal, but no series was ever produced.
The first pilot was written by Linwood Boomer and filmed on 22 January 1992 at Universal City Studios in Los Angeles. The cast included the following actors:
Dave Lister Craig Bierko
Arnold Rimmer Chris Eigeman
Holly Jane Leeves
The Cat Hinton Battle
Kryten Robert Llewellyn
Kristine Kochanski Elizabeth Morehead
First Officer Munson Michael Heintzman
Captain Tau Lorraine Toussaint
Grant Naylor served as technical consultants. Robert Llewellyn (from the BBC cast) reprised his role as Kryten. The plot was a retelling of "The End", with some elements of "Future Echoes" thrown in for good measure. Some surprising and odd changes were made: Lister was transformed into a clean-cut and well-dressed Caucasian, and the H on Rimmer's forehead was replaced with a silver marble. (You can see a transcription of the first pilot at https://www.crosswinds.net/~mvbeast/scripts/ams.htm.)
After this version was rejected, Grant Naylor filmed a second pilot with the following cast:
Dave Lister Craig Bierko
Arnold Rimmer Anthony Fuscle
Holly Jane Leeves
The Cat Terry Farrell
Kryten Robert Llewellyn
The second pilot was not a complete episode, but rather a promo that combined scenes from the first pilot, bits from the BBC series, and newly filmed segments spotlighting the new cast members. This pilot fixed some problems (such as restoring Rimmer's H), but had more odd changes, such as a female Cat. (Terry Farrell went on to play Jadzia Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.) The second pilot was also rejected, and the proposed series was shelved indefinitely.
[Does anyone know who wrote the second pilot, or when and where it was filmed? -- PMB]
Neither pilot has ever been aired or released on videocassette, but bootleg copies can be found at science fiction conventions.
A redesigned Kryten suit (of somewhat better quality than the old BBC version) was made for the U.S. pilots by Joseph Kerezman and Mike Moore of JK2 Costumers. After the pilots were rejected, the BBC created a new Kryten suit (based on the U.S. one) for Series 6.
Who is Grant Naylor?
"Grant Naylor" is the collective name used by the creative team of Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, who created Red Dwarf, wrote and produced Series 1 through 6, and wrote (individually or as a team) all of the Red Dwarf novels.
In 1996, Rob Grant resigned as coproducer and cowriter of the show. When asked why, he told the Radio Times, "We wrote the pilot for the series in 1983 . . . It's been a long time and it's taken up a lot of time . . . I thought, 'Enough's enough; I want more than just Red Dwarf on my tombstone.'"
Grant has since written a new science fiction comedy for Sky One called The Strangerers. The show premiered in the UK in February 2000 and chronicles "an attempted invasion of Earth by utterly incompetent aliens". He also wrote a special 5-part "millennium sitcom" called Dark Ages for ITV. Grant has no plans to write any more Red Dwarf.
The "About the Author" note in the first two Red Dwarf novels has this to say about the creator(s) of the series:
Grant Naylor is a gestalt entity occupying two bodies, one of which lives in north London, the other in south London. The product of a horribly botched genetic-engineering experiment, which took place in Manchester in the late fifties, they try to eke out two existences with only one mind. They attended the same school and the same university, but, for tax reasons, have completely different wives. The first body is called Rob Grant, the second Doug Naylor. Among other things, they spent three years in the mid-eighties as head writers of Spitting Image; wrote Radio Four's award-winning series Son of Cliche; penned the lyrics to a number one single; and created and wrote Red Dwarf for BBC television.
They have made a living variously by being ice-cream salesmen, shoe-shop assistants and by attempting to sell dodgy life-assurance policies to close friends. They also spent almost two years on the night shift loading paper into computer printers at a mail-order factory in Ardwick. They can still taste the cheese 'n' onion toasties.
Their favourite colour is orange.
Grant Naylor's number one single was "The Chicken Song," a Spitting Image spinoff. Philip Pope composed the music and produced the record, which was released in 1986 by Virgin Records.
What does "smeg" mean?
It's a word made up by Grant Naylor for the characters to use as an all-purpose profanity. Some fans have theorised that it was derived from "smegma" (a particularly unpleasant bodily secretion), but Rob and Doug deny this. In the interview on the CD included with the Six of the Best box set, they state that "we wanted to invent a futuristic curse word which had the right sort of consonant and vowel arrangement to make it sound like a genuine . . . curse word." In an online chat session, Doug Naylor said "I think it's Latin for clean, also there's an Italian washing machine company called Smeg. Also each of the letters S-M-E-G stand for smelting metal and something to do with the washing machine process." A detailed list of "smeg" references in the show is available at https://www.bristol.u-net.com/smegweb/docs/smeglist.html
What does "LEVEL NIVELO" mean?
Red Dwarf is a bilingual ship, with English and Esperanto as the two official languages. "Nivelo" is the Esperanto word for "level". The signs in the corridors of the ship simply indicate (in both languages) what level you're on.
Esperanto is a real language, developed in the the 1880s by Polish ophthalmologist L.L. Zamenhof. The episode "Kryten" establishes that Lister, Holly, and Kryten all speak at least some Esperanto. Rimmer doesn't seem to have mastered the language yet; he's shown trying to learn it from a videotape without much success.
The name "Esperanto" means "one who hopes," a fact that is alluded to in "Back to Reality." (It's a blatant clue, innit?) If you would like to know more about the language, https://www.esperanto.net is a good place to start.
What is "vindaloo"?
A very, very hot Indian curry dish that happens to be Lister's favorite food. Vindaloo can contain almost any sort of meat, so there are references to "mutton vindaloo," "chicken vindaloo," etc., in various episodes of the show.
What are the other foods mentioned on the show?
Denis Cage has compiled the Red Dwarf Food and Drink Guide, an extensive guide to every dish and beverage mentioned on the show or in the novels. You can find the Guide at https://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Hills/6061/.
Aren't there a lot of inconsistencies in Red Dwarf?
Many viewers have noticed that the details don't always match between one episode and another. The subject even comes up on the "Smeg Ups" tape when Kryten reads the Most Asked Questions About Red Dwarf, most of which have to do with one inconsistency or another. Annette McIntosh and Damone have compiled an exhaustive list of inconsistencies and contradictions within the TV series. This document is called the Red Dwarf Plot Inconsistencies Project (PIP) and can be found at https://www.ecr.mu.oz.au/~bjev/pip/pip_text.html.
Annette McIntosh maintains a similar document, the Red Dwarf Book Plot Inconsistencies Project (BPIP), which lists inconsistencies within the series of Red Dwarf novels: https://www.cobalt.demon.co.uk/alt.tv.red-dwarf/bpip.html
How did Holly become female? Why did Kryten change?
The original actor to play Holly, Norman Lovett, left the series after a dispute over his salary. In an interview with Red Dwarf Smegazine (issue 9, November 1992), Lovett said that he asked to be paid the same as the other actors on the series, but his request was turned down. Hattie Hayridge had appeared in "Parallel Universe" as Hilly, Holly's female counterpart. "When Norman said he wasn't doing another series, I auditioned," she recalls. The character of Holly kept the same name and personality despite the recasting.
Kryten's original actor, David Ross, wasn't available to commit to a series when Grant Naylor decided to make Kryten a continuing character, so he was replaced by Robert Llewellyn. (Ross later returned in "White Hole" as the new voice of Talkie Toaster.) There were also several changes in the show's look between Series Two and Three, including changes in costumes, sets, and miniatures, particularly the addition of the Starbug and its hangar bay.
Most of these changes are more or less explained by the following words that scroll rapidly up the screen at the beginning of "Backwards":
Three million years in the future, Dave Lister, the last human being alive, discovers he is pregnant after a liaison with his female self in a parallel universe. His pregnancy concludes with the successful delivery of twin boys, Jim and Bexley. However, because the boys were conceived in another universe, with different physical laws, they suffer from highly accelerated growth rates and are both eighteen years old within three days of being born. In order to save their lives, Lister returns them to the universe of their origin, where they are reunited with their father (a woman), and are able to lead comparatively normal lives. Well, as normal as you can be if you've been born in a parallel universe and your father's a woman and your mother's a man and you're eighteen years old three days after your birth. Shortly afterward, Kryten, the service mechanoid, who had left the ship after being rescued from his own crashed vessel, the Nova 5, is found in pieces after his space bike crashed into an asteroid. Lister rebuilds the 'noid, but is unable to recapture his former personality. Meanwhile, Holly, the increasingly erratic computer, performs a head sex change operation on himself. He bases his new face on Hilly, a female computer with whom he'd once fallen madly in love.
It is possible to read all this, if you have a VCR with good freeze-frame capabilities. Try it.
What happened to the Red Dwarf and Holly?
Throughout Series 6 and 7, the characters travel aboard Starbug; the Red Dwarf and Holly don't appear at all. This tends to confuse viewers who missed the explanation in "Psirens".
Briefly, what happened is this: Lister parked the Red Dwarf in orbit around a planetoid, and then forgot which planetoid it was. "They're all the same, those little blue-green planetoids. Blue-green and planetoidy." Subsequently, Red Dwarf was stolen "by persons or lifeforms unknown." Starbug followed the ship's vapor trail for over 200 years, with Lister and the Cat in deep sleep and Rimmer switched off to conserve power. At the first opportunity to actually catch up with Red Dwarf, Kryten revives the others, and the saga continued . . .
The real reason for the change was to eliminate Holly from the show. According to Hattie Hayridge, the parts for both Holly and the Cat had been getting smaller. Grant Naylor decided to drop one of the characters and expand the other. It was easier to drop Holly because many of her lines could be given to Kryten instead.
In "Nanarchy," Starbug finally catches up to Red Dwarf, and Norman Lovett returns to the show as Holly.
What's the title of the last episode of Series 2?
"Parallel Universe," according to the Radio Times and the BBC videotape. No title was given in the episode, which began with a musical number instead of the usual titles sequence. The title does appear on screen in the BBC videotape (and is on the label as well).
What are they really saying in "Backwards"?
Most of the reversed dialogue in the episode "Backwards" is pretty much either what the subtitles say it is or what you'd expect from context; some of it actually appears to be random noise. There are two notable exceptions, however.
When Lister and the Cat steal a bicycle, its owner yells after them, "You scoundrels! Return my bike immediately!" -- at least, according to the subtitles. What he actually says, however, is, "Oi! Hey! Oi, you robbing bastards, that's our tandem!"
Later, when the stage manager comes in to yell at Rimmer and Kryten, he appears to be blaming them for starting the fight. Here's what he actually says:
You are a stupid, square-headed, bald git, aren't you? Eh? I'm pointing at you, I'm pointing at you. But I'm not actually addressing you. I'm addressing the one prat in the country who's bothered to get hold of this recording, turn it round, and actually work out the rubbish that I'm saying. What a poor, sad life he's got! . . . Frankly, your act's crap. Anyway, anybody could have done it. I hate the lot of you. Bollocks to you!
What's in canister 1121?
According to the Red Dwarf Quiz Book, it's the remains of Kristine Kochanski. When Lister comes back to life on the backwards Earth, he discovers that he's married to an elderly version of Kochanski. Presumably, treating the canister with gamma and X rays was part of Holly's plan for restoring her to life along with Lister. (If none of this makes any sense to you, you haven't read the ending of the novel Better Than Life.)
The original script for "The End" included a scene (cut from the final version) in which Lister placed the powdered remains of each crewmember in a separate canister and ejected them all into space (and this is done with George McIntyre's remains in the aired version). It's reasonable to conclude that Lister did this, although nothing is said about it in either the episode or the novel. The number of canisters floating in space ("something in the region of ten thousand") is consistent with the size of the crew given in Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers ("eleven thousand, one hundred and sixty-nine").
Who played Baby Lister in "Ouroboros"?
Alexander John-Jules, Danny's nephew. When asked about this, Danny said: "When we saw the baby who was supposed to be playing Lister, we all realised that he was too dark to be a believable Lister, so I said 'My nephew looks a lot like Lister,' and that's how he got the job."
What are the Space Corps Directives?
Charles Daniels has collected all of the SCDs, Rimmer Directives, and All Nations Agreements into a comprehensive list: https://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/6122/directiv.htm
Are there aliens in Red Dwarf?
No. One of the premises of the show is that life never evolved anywhere in the universe except on Earth. All of the creatures encountered by Red Dwarf's crew -- GELFs, simulants, space weevils, polymorphs, you name it -- are descended from life forms that originated on Earth. For an in-depth discussion of this issue, refer to Annette Mcintosh's No Aliens FAQ at https://skynet.ul.ie/~colm/red/noaliens.html.
What are the lyrics of the theme song?
The theme song was composed by Howard Goodall and sung by Jenna Russell. The words are:
It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere
I'm all alone, more or less
Let me fly far away from here
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sunI want to lie shipwrecked and comatose
Drinking fresh mango juice
Goldfish shoals nibbling at my toes
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun
There has been much debate over the "goldfish" line -- it isn't sung very clearly, and some fans think they hear "Goldfish are nibbling." But Kryten recites the lyrics in the "Smeg Ups" video, and they are as listed above. (A "shoal" is a school of fish.)
An "extended mix" version of the song has been released on several soundtrack compilation CDs:
- Between the Lines, a collection of BBC themes
- The Cult Files, a collection of science fiction themes
- Stellar Themes, which has been given away as a subscription premium for the magazine Sci-Fi Universe
The extended version includes two extra verses written by percussionist Ian Hu (who apparently is not connected with Red Dwarf). The additional verses are as follows:
I'll pack my bags and head into hyperspace
Where I'll succeed at time-warp speed
Spend my days in ultraviolet rays
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sunWe'll lock on course straight through the universe
You and me and the galaxy
Reach the stage where hyperdrive's engaged
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun
What are the lyrics of "Tongue Tied"?
"Parallel Universe" begins with a musical number that turns out to be one of the Cat's dreams. The studio audience's laughter makes the lyrics a little hard to understand, but here's what they appear to be:
The Cat: Lister and Rimmer: When I saw you for the first time (first time) My knees began to quiver (quiver) And I got a funny feeling (feeling) In my kidneys and my liver (digestive system baby) My hands they started shakin' (shakin') My heart began a-thumpin' (boom boom boom) My breakfast left my body (huey huey huey) It all really tells me something Girl you make me tongue tied (tongue tied) Tongue tied, whenever you are near me (near me) Tied tongue (tied tongue) Tied tongue (tied tongue) Whenever you're in town I saw you 'cross the dance floor (dancin') I thought of birds and bees (reproductive system baby) And when I tried to speak to ya (talk talk) My tongue unraveled to my knees (flippety-flippety-flop) I tried to say I love you (love you) But it came out kind of wrong, girl (wrong girl) It sounded like "Nunubididoo" (tongue tied) Nuh mur nuh murh ni nong nurl 'Cause you make me tongue tied (tongue tied) Tongue tied, whenever you are near me (near me) Be-dobby-durgle (dobby-durgle) Tongue tied (tongue tied) Whenever you're around Oh I'm beggin' on my knees Sweet, sweet darling, listen please Understand me when I say Bedurble-diggle-doggle-dooby-doggle-durgle-day I'm trying to say nungy-nangy (nangy-nungy) Ningy-nongy, why can't I tell you clearly (clearly) Be-dobby-durgle (dobby-durgle) Durgle-dobby (durgle-dobby) Whenever you're around (around) Whenever you're around (around)
In the fall of 1993, "Tongue Tied" was released as a single in England and rose to #17 on the CIN Official UK Singles Chart. The artist was listed simply as "The Cat." A music video of "Tongue Tied" was reportedly shown on the Top of the Pops show in England and on MTV in the States. Copies of the video (and a half-hour program on the making of the video) are available from John McElroy. An alternative version of the video can be found on the "Smeg Outs" videotape.
What are the lyrics of the Rimmer Munchkin Song?
The song from The Rimmer Experience at the end of "Blue" has the following words:
If you're in trouble, he will save the day
He's brave and he's fearless, come what may
Without him, the mission would go astray
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
Without him, life would be much grimmer
He's handsome, trim, and no one's slimmer
He will never need a Zimmer
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
More reliable than a garden Strimmer
He's never been mistaken for Yul Brynner
He's not bald and his head doesn't glimmerMaster of the wit and the repartee
His command of space directives is uncanny
How come he's such a genius? Don't ask me
Ask Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
He's also a fantastic swimmer
And if you play your cards right, then he just might come round for dinner
[Xtended version only:]
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
No rhymes left now apart from quimmer
We hope they fade us out before we get to schwimmer
Fade out you stupid plimmer
The final verse is heard only in the longer version of the song included in the "Red Dwarf VII Xtended" video.
"Zimmer" is short for Zimmerframe, a walking frame for elderly or disabled people. It's mentioned in "Emohawk: Polymorph II" when Lister emphasises the slowness of Starbug by saying "Kryten, the Eastbourne Zimmerframe relay team could easily outrun us."
"Strimmer" is U.K. slang for a weed trimmer that uses a spinning length of monofilament line. (In the U.S., it would be called a "weed eater" or "weed whacker".)
Yul Brynner was the actor best known for playing King Mongkut of Siam in The King and I, a role for which he shaved his head.
Was Red Dwarf remastered?
Yes, it was. Series 1-3 received a Star Wars-style makeover in 1998 to update the visuals and make the show more consistent. (Remastering of Series 4-6 is expected at some point in the future.) Doug Naylor explained:
We're basically remastering the whole of the first six series for BBC Worldwide (the video company) who feel that they would be able to sell it more easily in Europe and America if there was a more unified look and feel to the whole of the series. What this means is . . . consistent opening titles; it means that in places we can replace and improve the model shots.
The remastering project included the following changes:
- The soundtrack was replaced with a new digital master.
- Most of the special effects shots were scrapped and re-filmed. Computer-generated graphics replaced some of the model shots.
- Red Dwarf has a slightly different look (more elongated and detailed).
- Blue Midget (the smaller vessel used in Series 1-3) has a radically different look: it has legs (like Starbug's) that give it a spidery appearance, but Blue Midget can actually walk on them. (The new and improved Blue Midget plays a major role in Series 8.)
- All of Norman Lovett's Holly footage from Series 1 and 2 was re-filmed.
- A consistent set of opening titles is used in all episodes.
What was "Red Dwarf Night"?
Saturday, 14 February 1998, was the tenth anniversary of the first airing of "The End." To celebrate, BBC 2 aired a special night of Red Dwarf-related programming hosted by Patrick Stewart:
- "Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg": A special edition of the BBC show "Can't Cook, Won't Cook," featuring the Red Dwarf cast.
- Red Dwarf Smeg Ups: A selection from the "Smeg Ups" and "Smeg Outs" videos, with new introductions.
- "Universe Challenge": A special fans-versus-cast version of the BBC quiz show University Challenge, hosted by Bamber Gascgoigne. (The fans won.)
- "Red Dwarf A to Z": A clip from the show for every letter in the alphabet, introduced by various celebrities. "R" (for Remastered) was a sample the Red Dwarf Special Edition, with the new Blue Midget.
- "Gunmen of the Apocalypse": The classic episode.
"Red Dwarf Night" has not been released on videocassette, but some video bootleggers have tapes of it. Try the Dealers' Room at any sizable science fiction convention.
What's new in Series 8?
Series 8 has the following notable characteristics:
- Like Series 7, it has eight episodes. (For titles, see "Is there an episode guide for Red Dwarf?")
- The scripts are by Doug Naylor and Paul Alexander.
- The entire cast returned for all eight episodes, including Chris Barrie, Chloe Annett, and Norman Lovett.
- Blue Midget has a new look (see "Is Red Dwarf being remastered?").
- Some portions of Series 8 were recorded with a live audience.
- The nanobots have not only recreated Red Dwarf, they have also populated the ship with its old crew (including the original non-hologram version of Rimmer, but not the original Kochanski).
- Mac McDonald returns as Captain Hollister. Crew members Selby and Chen are played by Paul Bradley and David Gillespie.
- The skutters also return. In fact, new skutter models were built for Series 8.
Is a Red Dwarf movie in the works?
Yes, at least one. With Series 8 out of the way, Doug Naylor should be starting work on the script sometime soon. The movie has a budget of 15 million pounds. Ed Bye will direct. Robert Llewellyn writes: "The situation, as far as I know, is that we are shooting the movie in the spring of 2000 for release in 2001. It will be shot in the UK and feature the original cast, plus some 'names' from America in special guest roles." If the first film does well, others will likely be made.
Will there be a Series 9?
Possibly. Robert Llewellyn writes: "As for the hundreds of e-mails I've had asking if there's going to be a series IX (9) all I can say is the BBC are very keen for there to be one. Only yesterday I heard it from the woman who is the head of the Independent commissioning group, it's down to the wonderfully talented Mr Doug Naylor to sit down and write them. But he's about to start writing Red Dwarf, The Movie. So who knows!"
What happened to Rimmer? How is Kochanski alive, and why does she look different?
In Series 7, schedule conflicts made it impossible to film more than four episodes with both Craig Charles and Chris Barrie. Since Lister is the central character of the show, the decision was made to do four episodes without Rimmer. Rimmer appears as usual in "Tikka to Ride," departs in "Stoke Me a Clipper," and appears in "Ouroboros" and "Blue" only as a flashback or a virtual reality simulation. However, the character returns in Series 8.
The original Kristine Kochanski, played by C.P. Grogan, is still dead. The Kochanski played by Chloe Annett is from a parallel universe -- one in which she, not Lister, was put in stasis for hiding a cat from the Captain. She joined the crew in "OUROBOROS", at which point the character was recast.
Where can I see Red Dwarf in the United States?
Red Dwarf is seen on public television stations across the country. If your local PBS station doesn't show it, write to them, and convince your friends to write to them, until they do! Series 1-8 are available for purchase by PBS member stations.

What are the "Smeg Ups" and "Smeg Outs" tapes?
"Red Dwarf Smeg Ups" is a 51-minute videotape (available from the same sources as the series videotapes) containing bloopers from Series 5 and 6, with commentary from Robert Llewellyn as Kryten. The tape also includes the unused ending from "Out of Time" and a sort of FAQ list in which Kryten attempts to answer the ten most asked questions about the show. "Red Dwarf Smeg Outs" is a similar collection of material from Series 1-3 (and even from "Smeg Ups"!), and also includes a music video version of "Tongue Tied" that mixes "Parallel Universe" footage with clay animation.
Note: Due to a nationwide change in British telephone codes, the phone numbers given in "Smeg Ups" for ordering merchandise are incorrect. One of the addresses has also changed since "Smeg Ups" was recorded. For the correct information, see "Where can I get other Red Dwarf merchandise?".

The following members of the cast have their own Web sites:
Craig Charles -- https://www.craigcharles.co.uk
Robert Llewellyn -- https://www.llew.co.uk/
The alt.tv.red-dwarf Documents Guide (maintained by Tafka) lists a great many unofficial documents, including the Space Corps Directives, a comprehensive timeline, plot inconsistency projects, reference lists and lists detailing roles played by Red Dwarf actors. Either look out for it weekly in alt.tv.red-dwarf or email Tafka at docguide@smegweb.co.uk and ask for a copy.
Where can I write to the cast and crew of the show?
The Official Red Dwarf Fan Club will forward mail to the cast and crew. They do not open the mail if a covering letter explains what it is and asks for it to be forwarded.

Was Craig Charles arrested for rape?
Yes, but he was cleared of all charges. Charles was arrested in July 1994 when his ex-girlfriend filed rape charges against him. He was tried during February and March of 1995, and subsequently acquitted. The ex-girlfriend withdrew her allegations.
Are there books about Red Dwarf?
Numerous Red Dwarf reference works are available:
The Official Red Dwarf Companion
by Bruce Dessau
ISBN 1-85286-456-7
Titan, 1995
This thin little book (95 pages) has a lot of wasted space, but some interesting quotes and information and some wonderful color photos throughout. If you're looking for in-depth, solid information about the show, this isn't where you'll find it; but if you want a nice, light read, a collector's item, and an attractive coffee-table book, this is it. Listed as available on https://www.amazon.co.uk, but at least one fan was told it was out of print.
Red Dwarf Programme Guide
by Chris Howarth and Steve Lyons
ISBN 0-7535-0103-1
Virgin, 1997
"Everything you never wanted to know about the smash smega-series." An in-depth collection (337 pages) of information about Series 1-7. It includes sections on History, The Characters, The Programmes, The Index, The Creators (cast and production crew), and The Spin-offs. The Index, by far the largest section of the book, is a lexicon of almost everything mentioned to during the series, from "A to Z of Red Dwarf, The" to "Zoom function".
Red Dwarf--Primordial Soup: The Least Worst Scripts
by Grant Naylor
ISBN 0-14-017886-4
Penguin, 1993
This book contains the complete scripts for "Polymorph," "Marooned," "Dimension Jump," "Justice," "Back to Reality," and "Psirens." Not published in the U.S., but available from John McElroy and other distributors of imported books.
Red Dwarf: Son of Soup
by Grant Naylor
ISBN 0-14-025363-7
Penguin, 1996
A sequel to Primordial Soup, containing scripts for "Gunmen of the Apocalypse," "Holoship," "Camille," "Backwards," "Kryten," and "Me^2," with introductions by Rob Grant.
The Man in the Rubber Mask
by Robert Llewellyn
ISBN 0-14-023575-2
Penguin, 1994
Describes Llewellyn's involvement in Red Dwarf from the beginning of Series 3 through the filming of the American pilots. Plenty of anecdotes and stories, and lots of trivia. The section on the American pilots is especially revealing, and gives some plausible reasons why the whole project fell through.
The Making of Red Dwarf
by Joe Nazzaro
ISBN 0-14-023206-0
Penguin, 1994
A rather slender book with lots of colour photographs. Focuses on the making of "Gunmen Of The Apocalypse". The book goes into a fair amount of detail, but nothing that couldn't have been gleaned from a half-dozen back issues of the now-defunct Smegazine. The book's main strength is the added material: some great photos, fragments of the original "Gunmen" script (mostly stage directions, but also one unfilmed scene) and storyboards used in the filming. The back of the book contains information on how you can purchase Red Dwarf paraphernalia such as t-shirts, baseball caps, and models of Starbug and Kryten.
Red Dwarf Quiz Book
by Nicky Hooks and Sharon Burnett
ISBN 0-14-023662-7
Penguin, 1994
Red Dwarf trivia and brain-teasers. Contains questions such as "What was referred to as a small off-duty Czechoslovakian traffic warden?", crosswords, word searches, "who said . . .", information about the cast, and photos. After a while, though, you have to wonder about the mind of someone who can come up with questions such as "What follows the leaflet campaign?" or "What was in canister 1121?"
A Question of Smeg
by Sharon Burnett and Nicky Hooks
ISBN 0-140-27070-1
Penguin, 1997
Sequel to the Quiz Book. Contains puzzles, quiz questions, and colour photographs.
Red Dwarf Space Corps Survival Manual
by Paul Alexander
ISBN 0-7493-2374-4
Mandarin, 1996
A survival guide for Space Corps officers, written by fictional Marine Colonel Mike "Mad Dog" O'Hagan (who served with the Space Corps Special Service Really Really Brave Division). Has sections on finding food and water, setting traps and snares, appointing a leader, survival psychology, first aid, and even surviving death. Includes numerous marginal notes and comments scribbled by the Lister, Rimmer, Kryten, and the Cat, a survival questionnaire filled out by each crewmember, and a flicker-book animation (of an arm being amputated) in a corner of the pages. Pictures from Series 7 appears as snapshots "taped" into the book. Quite funny, if a little fixated on cannibalism (or, as Col. O'Hagan prefers to call it, "recipe-based respect for the dead"). 112 pages.
Red Dwarf Log No. 1996
by Paul Alexander
ISBN 0-434-00370-0
William Heineman Ltd, 1995
A 1996 diary with a few extras. Computerised entries by the four crewmembers and Holly are scattered through the pages, along with recipes, Space Corps book excerpts, and other assorted items. Several new Space Corps Directives appear for the first time in this book.
